Arranging Furniture: Let it Float

Use an area rug to anchor floating furniture

First let us say that placing furniture next to the walls is not a bad thing.  In fact, in many cases, it’s the best choice for your living or family room.

But there are times, more often than you might think, that floating your furniture will help your space look and function much better.

Close enough for conversation.

The goal for arranging a seating area (or more than one, if space allows) is to be able to:

a) carry on a conversation without raising your voice,
b) easily move around the furniture,
c) have a space that looks pulled together – not disjointed.

Sometimes that just can’t happen if you’re pushing all of the furniture back against the walls.

Case in point, the Lakeside Cottage that we posted about earlier this week.
Floating furniture was the best option in our Lakeside Cottage living room
The living room was a little wide for this furniture placement, so we automatically just tweaked it in, away from the walls.  It was a small change really but you can see how it resulted in a much cozier conversation area in front of the fireplace.

Float, but anchor.

Anchoring your seating area with an area rug is almost always a good idea, but even more so when you’re floating furniture.

Add a rug (or two – love layers!) to firmly define the seating area, make the room more comfortable, and give it a finished look.

Give it a try.

When you’re used to having all of your furniture against the walls, it may feel awkward to all of sudden start floating furniture around in your space.

Play with the placement until you get it where you think it might work, and then live with it for a few days.  You may be surprised at how much better it looks and how well it functions!

We Minnesotans are known for being nice.   Many of us also like to think that we’re approachable, comfortable to be around, somewhat practical, and stylish but not overboard.

When it comes to our homes, especially the rooms where we spend a good portion of our time, we want them to be that way too.  Approachable and comfortable.  Family friendly, and not too stuffy or overdone.
