Whether or not to put their bed in front of a window is a definite design conundrum for some, especially when wall space is limited.
I was faced with this issue when a relative asked for advice about her new bedroom. She had two options for bed placement, one being in front of a window. Even though she felt that was absolutely the best choice, she was unsure, from a design perspective, if it was “okay” to do it.
The answer? Absolutely!
When?
In some spaces having the bed in front of a window is IT. You’ll either put it there or be without a bed – which really isn’t an option, of course. In other bedrooms there may be another wall option but functionally and/or visually the window wall just works better.
Either of these is a perfect reason to choose the window wall.
Downplay or dramatize?
Sometimes the room size or style can dictate whether the window should be downplayed or dramatized, and sometimes it’s just a personal preference. Here’s some ideas on how to do it:
Downplay: 1) leave windows bare and paint trim the same as walls, and/or 2) add window treatments with minimal contrast, or 3) completely hide windows using closed curtains in the same color as the wall.
Dramatize: Take full advantage of your combined focal point (bed and window) by making a dramatic statement with beautiful window treatments and bedding, or 2) cover the window with curtains but use a fabric with bold color or a striking pattern.

And if there are two windows?
Centering the bed between the two windows is usually the best solution, if possible.
What about decorating?
There may an occasional challenge when decorating a room with the bed in front of a window, but, generally speaking, all of the normal decorating principles and ideas apply – have fun with it!
