Design rules are part of interior design for a reason, and even the rules that aren’t really rules – but rather opinions or suggestions – are very helpful in putting together a space that functions well and looks good.

But once you’ve followed all of the rules and suggestions, it’s possible that your space may not yet feel like “you”. Or maybe it seems to be missing that certain something?

Use these tips to put your own unique decorating spin on your space:

Pick and choose trends.

We think it’s nice to be informed about what’s new and trending, so we do our fair share of posting about design trends.

That can be inspiring, and you might see something that you love and want to try. You may also discover a part of your design aesthetic that you didn’t know existed before.

But don’t incorporate trends into your home just because they’re trending. The trend may actually look great in your home, but it’s not great if it’s not you.

On the flip side, if you love a trend, don’t be afraid to embrace it even if none of your friends are.

Decorate with what you love.

Add Unique Custom Details

Add a unique decorating twist with custom details – like board and batten, shiplap, molding, wallpaper, a bold paint color, distinctive doors, or a unique ceiling treatment.

These details don’t have to be exotic (unless you want them to be) or expensive (especially if you DIY), and they’ll instantly enhance your space.

Customize Furniture

Thankfully, we have great buyers and designers here at Schneiderman’s, so you can walk into any of our showrooms and find complete rooms that will be beautiful and functional just as you see them.

However, much of our furniture is also available for custom order in a variety of fabrics, colors and finishes – and with custom design details like contrast welt and nailheads.

So don’t be afraid to customize furniture in ways that will perfectly fit your style, and show your unique decorating flair.

Add Some Personality

You know the quirky thing that catches your eye when you’re shopping and you just can’t seem to forget about it? It’s a little out of your normal decorating box but you really love it?

Go for it.

I’m not suggesting that you should buy everything that catches your eye, obviously. But incorporating one or two things that are unusual or out of your normal decorating box will add personality to your space. And they’ll make you smile when you walk into the room!

Get Personal.

Give your home a personal touch and your own unique decorating angle by using items that have special meaning to you.
