Concrete is a strong, eco-friendly and affordable substance and has uses that can be traced back to ancient times. It’s also the most widely used man-made material (tonnage wise) in the world.
Many structures, including famous ones like the Hoover Dam and Roman Pantheon, are made from it, and some not-so-famous structures, like our homes, usually start with it. It’s always been a part of our lives, in ways seen and unseen, and we probably haven’t given it much thought.
In recent years, though, this tough and durable substance has emerged as an indoor design trend. No longer considered something that needs to be hidden, walls and floors are being exposed to make a design statement.
In their post “Why Concrete Floors Rock”, HGTV says it’s “durable, stain-proof, waterproof, and chic, giving your room a sleek contemporary look. Concrete withstands wear, and it’s resistant to fire, stains, water, bacteria and odors. It won’t scratch, it’s easy to clean, and the design is customizable. Concrete also contributes to good air quality, and it can help reduce energy bills when used properly.” Impressive!
It’s not just for floors either. Many homeowners are embracing it’s durability and it’s unique look for places like countertops, sinks, fireplaces and even furniture (like this dining table).
Such an interesting and unique use of the material for the island in this kitchen designed by Mary Beth Hartgrove. (source)
DIY’ers have jumped on the bandwagon as well, creating a variety of fun, functional and unique items for home and gifts.
One that we’re loving are these pendant lights. So clever, and what a great look!
In the furniture category, our Sherborne tables are right on trend. We love the unpredictable mix of the sleek natural concrete tops atop more traditional bases. A great combination of warmth, character, uniqueness and durability. Perfect!
What’s your take on this concrete trend? Or concrete tables? Have you embraced either the trend or the tables in your home?
