Family-friendly decorating ideas

It’s probably pretty safe to say that almost everyone loves a home tour.  Whether it’s a major guided tour of an entire home, or just a little sneakity-peek into someone else’s design choices in hopes of gleaning some inspiration for your own space.

Which is exactly what today’s tour is.  A peek into a few of the rooms in this beautiful suburban two-story that we recently styled for a shoot.

I’ll give you my take on some of the family-friendly decorating ideas that stood out to me, and you can let me know if your favorites were the same.   Let’s do this…

The kitchen.

There are really great features in this kitchen — the mix of white and wood, the custom detail around the top of the cabinets, the coffered ceiling, that beautiful island… but my absolute favorite detail is the hidden walk-in pantry.

A perfect way to keep those snacks and staples easily accessible for the family, and the chalkboard door just makes it so much fun!

Functional mudroom.

If you’re lucky enough to have a mudroom in your home, you know how nice it is to have a space dedicated to handling the days comings and goings without trashing the rest of the house.

I love the use of wainscoting – and maximizing storage space with large drawers in the bench is a smart idea, too.

The herringbone tile floors in trending gray hues are a pretty, modern way to handle foot traffic without batting an eye.

Cozy family room.

Corner fireplaces can be tricky to decorate around (which is why this is one of our most popular posts), but this room handles it beautifully – cleverly combining the fireplace with a media wall.

And with the comfy slip-covered sectional positioned to take advantage of both, it feels so relaxed and inviting. Plenty of room for everyone – the perfect family space.

You’ll notice that we tried out a couple of different coffee table options, with option 2 not really being a coffee table at all.  Instead we positioned 2 benches together to offer ultimate versatility – use as a coffee table, but then pull one away when needed for extra seating!

Family-friendly dining.

The dining room is light and airy and, once again, wainscoting makes an appearance.  This is a great way to add design detail (and wall protection) in almost any room of the house.   And it’s fairly inexpensive and simple to do.

And, when it comes to furniture, this room incorporates one of my very favorite family-friendly decorating ideas for any room — and it’s so simple.  Rustic furniture.

Rustic furniture has a liveable, laid-back vibe that instantly makes any space more comfortable. And the distressing and added patina help make them low-stress pieces for every day family living.
