Depending on your point of view, furniture shopping may be really fun and exciting, or it might be approached with a little anxiety and trepidation.

But, no matter your perspective, there are 7 things that will help ensure an enjoyable, stress-free shopping experience and a successful outcome.

Here are our top tips:

1. Determine function.

Take some time to consider how you want your new furniture to function once you get it home.

  • How much use will it get? Should there be special fabric considerations?
  • What activities will take place in the space? – TV viewing, games, conversation, eating, work, etc. What type of furniture will best accommodate those activities?
  • How many people do you need to comfortably seat?

Include these important details on your shopping list so they’re easily accessible.

2. Define your style.

Our furniture showrooms are full of design inspiration and an interesting mix of design styles. While this can make shopping really fun, it may also be a little overwhelming if you haven’t already decided which style you’re going for.

So hone in on your style preferences before heading out the door, and bring your style inspiration with you when you shop.

3. Know your numbers.

You can follow all of the shopping tips in the world, but if your new furniture won’t fit through the door – or is the completely wrong scale for the room – nothing else will really matter.

Measure the room(s) you’re shopping for, and specific furniture pieces that you’re trying to replace. Then determine furniture placement by taping out the various furniture pieces on the floor, or using graph paper or a room planner to help you decide.

And, take the measurements with you when you shop, of course.

4. Decide on a budget.

Crunch the numbers and decide how much flexibility you may or may not have in your budget prior to hitting the showroom floor. This will give you a clear direction, and help your sales associate point you to pieces that will be in line with the range you’ve set.

5. Shop with the decision maker.

Trying to guess what another person might think of your furniture shopping decisions can add unnecessary stress and delay purchases.

If you’re depending on another person to help you make decisions, bring them with you when shop.

6. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Rather than trying to describe your home or room to your design consultant in words, or even remember what it looks like yourself, snap some quick pictures of the room for a handy reference while you’re shopping.

7. Don’t go it alone.

Design consultants and sales associates are there to help with your furniture shopping experience, so use them to your full advantage to help you find what you’re looking for. They are experienced, and may have some options and ideas for you that you hadn’t thought of.

(Also, remember that just because you don’t see something doesn’t mean that it’s not available. Many items are available in different fabrics and finishes via custom order.)

We would love to help you find the perfect furniture for your space.
