Furnishing Your Home: 8 Ways to Use an Ottoman

One of the most versatile pieces of furniture, hands down, has to be the ottoman. It’s so much more than a footstool, and can be used in a variety of ways throughout your home.

Here are just some of the ways to consider:

1. Rest your feet.

Yes, ottomans are so much more than a footrest, but supporting your feet is still one of their most obvious and much loved benefits.

Use one with a chair or a sofa, pop one between two chairs to share, or arrange four chairs around an ottoman for a cozy conversation grouping.

2. Extra seating.

Ottomans are a perfect way to add versatile seating in a room without hogging space.  And they can be easily moved from room to room.

3. Cocktail table.

Cocktail ottomans are a softer alternative to a traditional cocktail table, and are a popular choice for living and family rooms.   The right one can multitask as a footrest, storage, and a place to set drinks or accessories.

4. Storage.

Use a storage ottoman in the living or family room, home office, bedroom, or mudroom for those items you want to keep close at hand but out of sight.

5. Under the table.

Add an ottoman or two under a console table in an entry or foyer to fill the space, add color and texture, and provide a place to sit when taking shoes or boots off and on.

The right ottoman could also provide a place to store mittens, hats, and scarves.

6. At the foot of the bed.

An ottoman (or two) at the end of a bed makes for a nice transition from the bed to the floor and adds additional seating to the room.

7. A side table.

A small ottoman can work great as a side table when you want something just a little different.  It can also pull double duty as a seating option when extra guests show up.

8. Make a statement.

It’s always fun to have a piece in the room that has a bit (or a lot) of wow factor.

Choose an ottoman that will do that for you, or create your own by customizing with colorful or unique fabric upholstery and/or design details like nail heads, a contrast welt, or tufting.

Bonus small space idea:

Small spaces require creative space planning and smart use of furniture.

Which is why we love the idea of an ottoman/bed!   It can function as seating or a cocktail ottoman during the day and an easy sleep solution at night.  Perfect…
