Design Dilemma – Can I Put A Bed In Front Of A Window?

The whole dilemma of whether or not to place a bed in front of a window is not a new one, but it came up again for me recently.

I was talking with someone who was in the process of furnishing her new home and trying to decide on furniture placement for the master bedroom.

There were two options for bed placement, one was to place the bed in front of a window and the other was on the opposing wall. Even though the window option worked the best for a variety of reasons, she was unsure, from a design perspective, if she should do it.

So the question is:

Is it okay to place a bed in front of a window (or windows)?

The answer:  Absolutely.

In some spaces it may not be the first or optimal solution but, in others, it may really be the best one or the only one!

Because room sizes and window style, size, and placement vary, there’s more than one way this could play out.

Here are some options to make this whole “bed in front of a window” idea a good one for your space.

Blend It In:

Match the headboard as closely to the wall color and window trim as possible if you don’t have window treatments.

In the space below, even though the headboard has a dark stain, they’ve blended it all together by:

  1. Repeating the white of the bedding and window trim in the window treatment.
  2. Adding wood blinds to ease the transition from headboard to window.
  3. Hanging framed black and white photos – the frames repeat the headboard color and the black and white photos repeat the pillow colors from the bed.

Play It Up!

This room is more colorful than the rest in this post but there’s still no missing the window, since they’ve played it up with a focal point window treatment.

A Combination:

High contrast between the wall and window treatment definitely makes this window a “can’t miss”, and they’ve incorporated the bed into it by using the same “black banding on white” theme.

Hide it!

This appears to be a complete wall of windows, but they’ve chosen to hide the center window with window treatments (assuming heavily lined) and make it a focal point “wall” by hanging the mirror.

In the master bedroom, "the light fixtures and mirror have center stage, so the wall-mounted bedside tables had to float quietly," says Brown. Bedside lights "are big sconces, basically," from David Weeks in New York.

If your room is light deficient but you want to cover the window, use a similar concept by hanging, and closing, sheer window treatments.  Complete the look by hanging a decorative element from the curtain rod.

What if there are two windows?

The image below shows a very successfully designed room with a bed in front of two windows.  It looks great and still allows the windows to be functional.

The one below is a little different in that they’ve just used blinds as treatments.  I’ve always admired the creativity of the mirror hung in the center of the windows in this space.

I’ve wondered though –  if they are functioning blinds, do they get caught on the mirror?

I love that you posted about this as I was just thinking about re-arranging our bedroom. We have two large windows and I’ve been contemplating moving our bed to be in front of the windows. I think we’re going to give it a try and see how we like it – thanks for the tips!
