Who’s a fan of the Chesterfield sofa?
If your hand is raised, it’s not surprising – you and a great portion of the population these days. And, really, what’s not to like? The Chesterfield has it all – a classic silhouette, great style, interesting details, and design versatility.
When. Where. What?
According to my Google research, it appears that there’s some mystery, and varying opinions, around the actual origin of this much loved sofa style. Many sources agree, though, that the first one was most likely commissioned by the 4th Earl of Chesterfield in England – thus the name. (It seems that, in addition to being an Earl, he may have also been a trendsetter.)
The first Chesterfield was leather and had all of the defining qualities you see today – rolled arms and back of equal height, all over deep button tufting, and nail head trim. Since then, it’s been reinvented many times, and in all kinds of fabrics.
Reinventions.
One of our favorite reinventions is our Dorchester Abbey Sofa, a chesterfield sofa upholstered in a neutral, linen-look fabric. (Also available in leather and other fabric options via custom order.)
This sofa has so much versatility from a design standpoint, and we love to spin it different ways…
1. We’ve done Farmhouse Chic:
2. And a Lakeside Cottage living room:
3. A New Traditional Look:
4. Modern Mix:
And in our most recent adventure with the Chesterfield, we took a little walk on the modern side. Our designers created an interesting mix of traditional and modern elements, which all came together to create a fresh, inviting look.
We love how it turned out, and this is probably my personal favorite of the 4 looks.
